Recent Google studies have shown that quantum computers may require far less resources than previously expected to decipher the code that protects encrypted money block chains. The new Google study released on Monday estimated that, on the basis of the current hardware capability assumptions, a quantum computer could use less than 500,000 physical quantum bits to decipher bitcoin and encryption techniques used in the Ether Workshop. Quantum bits are the basic units of quantum computers.

Researchers compiled two quantum circuits and tested them on ultraconductive bits, cipher-related quantum computers, which reported a “twenty-fold reduction” in the number of quantum bits used to decipher the dispersion of 256 elliptical curves that were widely used in encrypted money block chains (EDLP-256).

The study notes that, in theoretical terms, quantum computers can decipher a bitcoin's private key in only nine minutes, which provides a short window of time for their execution of the “immediate cost attack”, given that the bitcoin's block is 10 minutes.

The so-called “immediate cost” quantum attack is a hypothetical future threat, i.e. the ability of a quantum computer to decrypt a private key from a public key revealed in the course of the transaction, thus allowing the assailant to steal funds. “We estimate that it would take about 9 minutes or 12 minutes from the start of the state of preparedness to the immediate execution of the attack.” “I have significant confidence in the arrival of Quantum Day 2032. I believe that at least 10 per cent of the probability is that in 2032 a quantum computer will recover [...] private keys from the exposed public key.”

In addition, researchers warned that the ETA model of accounts was “structuredly vulnerable to static attacks”, which meant that they did not need time. Once their first transactions are sent with the Taifeng account, their public key is permanently displayed on the block chain. Quantum attackers can spend time extracting their private key from any exposed public key. Google estimates that the richest 1,000 exposed Etherwood accounts, with approximately 2.5 million Ethernets, can be decrypted within less than nine days.

Google expressed its desire to raise awareness of the issue and to “provide suggestions for improvements to the encrypted currency community to enhance security and stability”. Google recommends that the transition from block chains to later quantum code (PQC) now, rather than waiting for a real threat to emerge.
