The CME Group, a global top derivative exchange operator, disclosed in a announcement on Thursday that the launch of the XRP futures was scheduled for 19 May and is awaiting regulatory review. The XRP futures introduced will consist of two contractual scales: micro-contracts (2,500 XRP) and large contracts (50,000 XRP), which will be settled in cash and are based on the CME CF XRP-US dollar reference rate at 4 p.m. London time per day.
Previously, information about the XRP and Solana futures, which were to go online on 10 February, was leaked from CME ' s pre-publication website, but CME subsequently clarified that the information was inaccurate and stated that there were no formal plans to confirm it. This official statement appears to confirm the market ' s interest in and expectation of XRP futures.
Giovanni Vicioso, CME, which is responsible for the encryption product strategy, points out that as institutional and individual users are increasingly interested in XRP and its technology, this is a key reason for the upcoming launch. He stressed that “as the use of institutions and individual users on the network grows, interest in XRP and its bottom books (XRPL) has steadily increased. We are pleased that these new futures contracts have been launched to provide clients with a more capital-efficient toolkit to support their investment and hedging strategies.”
This addition of XRP futures has expanded the existing CME portfolio of encrypted currency products, including bitcoin, futures and options in the Taifung, and recently launched SOL futures. According to CME data, the average daily transactions of encrypted currency futures and options reached 198,000 contracts in the first quarter, with a nominal value of $11.3 billion, an increase of 141 per cent over the same period. The average number of open contracts also increased to 251,000, an increase of 83 per cent from the same quarter last year.
According to JB Mackenzie, Vice-President and Managing Director of Robinhood Futures and International Operations, “The introduction of XRP futures from CME Group to Robinwood is a natural next step in our mission to expand access to futures transactions in the retail market. CEO Teucrum Sal Gilbertie also mentioned that “XRP was designed for actual financial use cases, and today global value transfers are achieved through quick, low-cost XRP Ledger” and that the company's 2x Daily Long XRP ETF managed assets amounting to $35 million over its first 10 trading days.
