According to the report published in the Financial Times on 17 April,MoneyAdvice to the Government on the regulation of encrypted currency and the national digital asset reserve has been initiated. Richard Teng, who succeeded Zhao Chang Peng (CZ) as Chief Executive Officer of Currency, stated that the company was actively supporting multiple Governments in developing encrypted monetary policies. Teng points out that the United States is “near ahead” in many other jurisdictions and states:
In fact, we have received requests from Governments and sovereign wealth funds to establish their own secure currency reserves.
Despite Teng's refusal to disclose which Governments had contacted the currency, he confirmed that the company had been approached by “many” countries to help them “to develop a regulatory framework for the management of encrypted currency”.
It was less than two years before the exchange pleaded guilty in the United States to criminal charges involving money-laundering and sanctions violations. The company is still under United States supervision and has a five-year compliance control arrangement run by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.
Policy changes in the United States President Donald Trump have affected the positioning of the currency. Teng shares:
We have greatly benefited from United States policies over the past few months. I think the mood has changed considerably.
Despite the recent order by Trump to establish a strategic bitcoin reserve, the United States clarified that it would initially include digital assets confiscated by the Department of Law Enforcement rather than new markets. However, Bitcoin supporters regard this as a symbolic endorsement of encrypted currency as a sovereign asset.
At the same time, CZ is providing advice to countries such as Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan on block chains and digital asset strategies. His expertise supported the creation of regulatory frameworks and the promotion of de-centre financial innovation aimed at enhancing economic growth, digital transformation and global competitiveness in emerging markets through the integration of block chains.
