The greyscale investment has been submitted with a plan to convert its privately held large-disk fund into a trading open index fund (ETF), which will enable public investors to access the portfolio, including Bitcoin, the Ether, XRP, Solana and Cardano. Currently, the Fund is open to certified investors only through private distribution. At the time of the application, Bitcoin accounted for 79.4 per cent of the Fund, followed by 10.69 per cent of the Ethers, 5.85 per cent of XRP, 2.92 per cent of Solana and 1.14 per cent of Cardano. Cardano joined the Fund in January 2025, replacing Avalanche, which had been removed as a result of index rebalancing. Since its launch in 2018, the market price of the Fund has increased by 478.83 per cent, based on data on greyscale.

The ETF application was submitted to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) through form S-3 on 1 April. If approved, it would bring the Fund to a wider audience and track about 75 per cent of the digital currency market, excluding memes and stable currencies. The greyscale has not yet disclosed the final management fee, which may change.

Following the approval of the real bitcoin ETF in January 2024, the demand for the new encrypted currency ETF surged, followed by the Taifung ETF and the Mixed Bitcoin-Etherwood Fund. According to CoinGlass, the Bitcoin ETF in the United States now manages $9,777 million in assets, while ETF holds $8,590 million. However, the grey-scale bitcoin spot ETF experienced over $15 billion in outflows, the largest ETF divestment since March 2009. Rapid redemption raised concerns about how long the Fund would be able to maintain its Bitcoin reserves.

With the growing popularity of the encrypted ETF, the issuer has begun to submit applications for funds to track other assets, including the M.E.s of Dogecoin, XRP, Solana and Donald Trump. Eric Balchunas, an ETF analyst at Bloomberg, speculated that DoGE and TRUMP ETF might be launched in early April, but a survey by Myriad Markets showed that 93 per cent of voters believed that TRUMP ETF would not be achieved by the end of the month.

The encrypted currency index ETF is becoming the focus of the Fund ' s management firm ' s expansion of its product line beyond a single asset product. In December 2024, SEC approved the first mixed encrypted currency index ETF, sponsored by Hashdex and Fidelity, but these ETFs only contain bitcoin and Ethera. Since their launch in February, they have received relatively moderate financial inflows. Katalin Tischhauser, Director of Investment Studies at Sygnum Bank, noted that, like the traditional market index funds, the index ETF provided efficiency for investors.

Against the backdrop of increased regulatory acceptance, the latest application for greyscale is in the midst of fluctuations in the encrypted ETF market. Despite wider institutional adoption, there is uncertainty about long-term investor demand for digital asset funds.
