The European Wind Investment Agency, Seedcamp, completed a $320 million new fund-raising exercise, which was significantly larger than the sixth tranche in 2023. The new funds will be used in two parts, one to continue to be invested in early start-ups and the other to be earmarked for subsequent investment in the growth phase. At the same time, the company intends to expand its United States team and strengthen its local project and capital network.
Funds split into two funds
Of this fund-raising, $220 million will go to Seedcamp VII, mainly for early investment; and another $100 million will go to the newly created Select Fund for growth and investment.
According to the Sedcamp management, the early fund will continue its consistent strategy of entering into start-up companies as early as possible, covering periods where products are not yet ready, income is not yet in place and even business has not yet started. The growth fund will invest in a follow-up round, focusing on B and later stages.
- Seedcamp VII Single initial investment of about $1 million
- The plan covers about 100 to 120 start-ups.
- Select Single investment of about $3 million to $5 million
The American team will continue to expand.
Seedcamp now has offices in New York and Miami. As San Francisco and Silicon Valley re-established in recent years as an important hub for technology entrepreneurship and financing, the agency is preparing to further expand its local United States team.
The management stated that the focus of the exercise was not simply to increase the number of offices, but to help its European investors to gain faster access to United States clients, investors and industrial resources. For a European fund with early investment, the connectivity of the United States market is becoming an important link in the subsequent scaling up of project value.
Continue the early bet strategy
Sedcamp has earlier invested in a number of well-known technology companies, including Revolut, UiPath, Wise and Syrnthesia. According to the agency, the portfolio currently covers more than 550 companies, including 12 unicorns, and manages assets of approximately $1 billion.
The limited partners in the current period include British Business Bank, HarborVest, Schroders and Sofina, and 80 founders of its investment company, who participate as angel investors.
In the direction of investment, Seedcamp stated that it would continue to maintain the cross-channel layout but would continue to evade business types, such as travel and some platform models, that consumed funds. The judgement is that such companies rely more on operating funds at an early stage than they do in their investment style, which favours commercial efficiency.
