When Microsoft released the Majorana 2 quantum chip, the controversy surrounding its core technology base rose rapidly. Henry Legg, a physicist at St. Andrews University, commented in Nature, questioning that Microsoft had yet to prove that quantumbit had been achieved, and that was the most critical technical point of the chip.
The controversy is focused on the core technology.
Microsoft had previously stated that Majorana 2 was an important advance towards a functional quantum calculation and indicated that its reliability was 1,000 times higher than that of previous generations. The company also stated that the chip allowed the quantum information to stabilize, on average, for about 20 seconds, with some quantum bits to last up to 1 minute.
This route relies on quantum bits. In Microsoft ' s view, such quantums are more resistant to errors and can help to address the lack of stability in the current quantum computing system. However, Legg argues that the available public evidence is not sufficient to support this determination.
Researchers question the experimental interpretation.
Legg pointed out that while the Microsoft Quantum team published in Nature in 2025 had given the relevant signals, the results could also be explained by experimental noise, and not necessarily meant that quantum bits had been validated.
He also stated that part of the underlying Microsoft conclusions was not publicly transmitted and did not clearly show the evidence needed to form the relevant superconductor. According to him, these measurements are closer to other possibilities, including quantum point effects.
Microsoft's public response maintains the conclusion
In the face of questioning, Microsoft has not adjusted its original version. Chetan Nayak, head of Microsoft Quantum Hardware, stated that the company was committed to the results of existing experiments and the established road map.
On the same day, Microsoft also issued an official response in Nature, stating that the signs of stability observed in the experiment were consistent with the expansion of the state. Such signals are unlikely to occur if the system is just noise or is in the state of incompetence that Legg described. Microsoft also mentioned that the company had entered the final phase of the DARPA Quantum Benchmarking Scheme and stated that this progress had been independently evaluated.
The encryption industry is concerned with quantum security.
The debate has once again touched on the long-standing issue of quantum security in the encryption industry. The market usually defines “Q-Day” as the point at which a quantum computer can break into a mainstream public key encryption system.
Bitcoin is often seen as the focus of this risk discussion, as quantum attackers may theoretically push their private keys from the public key and transfer funds. The dispute did not negate future quantum threats, but there was a clear disagreement as to whether the evidence currently presented by Microsoft was sufficient to support such a technology.
