OpenAI showed the United States Government the capability of the GPT-5.6 series before the official launch on Friday. The series includes Sol, which is front-line, Terra, which is day-to-day, and Luna, which is for high-frequency scenes. The company states that this arrangement is related to its previous agreement with the United States Department of Defense.

Preview of the government before publication

OpenAI states that the preview was based on an earlier cooperation framework with the United States Department of Defense. Under this arrangement, the Pentagon in the United States could use the OpenAI artificial intelligence model.

At the same time, companies emphasize that such a process, which is open to Governments and then introduced to a wider market, should not become a long-term default model. OpenAI believes that if this approach is normalized, the time taken by developers, business users, cyber-security defences and international partners to acquire new tools will be prolonged.

Three models are different.

This highlighted GPT-5.6 series contains three models:

  • Sol: Positioning as the next-generation forward model
  • Terra: Main efficiency and day-to-day common tasks
  • Luna: Emphasis on speed and cost, suitable for high frequency use

In terms of naming and positioning, OpenAI is continuing to disaggregate model product lines to cover different needs such as high performance, universal efficiency and large-scale calls.

Increased openness in the coming weeks

OpenAI indicated that this short-term arrangement was accepted in the hope that it would facilitate the wider access of the model in the coming weeks. According to the company, work is also under way with the United States Government to advance the framework of executive orders related to cybersecurity, as well as the repertoire of future models.

This means that the GPT-5.6 series is still at a limited preview stage, but greater openness to the public and to business clients is already planned. For external developers, the next focus will be on specific opening hours, as well as the scope of access and conditions of use of different versions.
