OpenAI is continuing to expand the Indian layout. The company has appointed Prabhjeet Singh, the former Managing Director of India and South Asia, as India ' s first Managing Director, to promote user growth, business landing, cooperative outreach and local operations in the market.

Joined in September for India as a whole

OpenAI confirmed to TechCrunch that Singh will join in September and report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director of the Asia-Pacific Region. His responsibilities cover many aspects of consumer growth, business adoption, partnerships, regulatory communication and operations.

This is also the first time that OpenAI has created the post of Managing Director for India. The appointment of India as the second largest market after the United States showed that it was moving further from policy and cooperative expansion to more complete localization.

Continued expansion of teams and offices over the past year

OpenAI opened its first office in New Delhi last August and earlier this year indicated that it will continue to open new offices in Mumbai and Bangalore.

With regard to personnel, in 2024 OpenAI had engaged former Trueceller and Meta executives, Pragya Misra, for public policy and cooperation, and subsequently expanded their areas of responsibility for strategy and global affairs. Earlier, the company also invited Rishi Jaitly, former head of Twitter India, to serve as a senior adviser to help it communicate with the Government of India on the AI policy.

The scope of cooperation has covered education, payment and data centres

Over the past few months, OpenAI has worked in India with a wide range of institutions in areas such as higher education, business payments, AI electricians and network-stream media, and is involved in the construction of local data centres.

The rapid spread of ChatGPT in India has been mentioned by the company many times before as an important reason for its continued addition to the local market. The large Indian enterprise groups Reliance and Tata Group have also become early partners of OpenAI on the ground.

At the same time, OpenAI has expanded recruitment in India to include AI deployment of engineers, developers experience engineers, developers marketing directors, cooperation directors and solutions engineers.

US AI competed for heat in India

India has a large group of developers, over 1 billion Internet users, and a growing generation of AI demand, which is becoming an important market for US AI companies.

OpenAI's competitor Anthropic established an office in Bangalore at the end of 2025 and appointed Irina Ghose, former Managing Director of Microsoft India, as head of Indian operations this year. Competition in the Indian market continues to rise as major AI companies complete local teams.
