YC-supported insurance technology start-up company, Corgi, is in open-source dispute over a newly launched data room product, Dataroom. The company denied to TechCrunch the theft of the PaperSmart code, but admitted that the visual and functional design of some pages was too close to existing products in AI-aided development.

The controversy started with the Dataroom online.

The co-founder of the Open Source Data Room software PaperSmart, Marc Seitz, accused on platform X that Corgi had owned its products and issued them on its own brand. He further stated that the practice involved copyright and licence infringement and even constituted “fraud”.

Corgi co-founder and CEO N token issued Laqua subsequently responded that the company had verified the code and the results showed that the bottom code of the two products was different. He stressed that the misappropriation of codes was a matter of two different kinds, as was the use of existing product styles.

The company recognizes that page design is similar

Laqua also admits that the team relied on “vibe coding” in its development, resulting in a high degree of similarity in the visual language and part of its functions. He stated that the team should have used its own language more, rather than taking too many design clues from the same product.

According to the spokesperson for Corgi, the problem was concentrated on the visual elements of the two marginal pages, which had been immediately modified. The company reiterated that the internal confirmation did not use any of the PaperSmart codes.

AI programming brings new controversy

The fermentation continues not only because the two companies accuse each other, but also because it touches on a real problem of AI-aided development: When a tool can quickly reset the structure, interface and function of another product, whether the different code is sufficient to draw a line.

It was mentioned that, at the legal level, the consistency of codes remained the key criterion for judgement, and that the matter was therefore different from the case of the PearAI Direct Open Source Cloning Project in 2024. At the ethical level of the industry, however, similar disputes may become more common.

Corgi Counsel ' s letter sent

In order to control the impact of reputation, Corgi has sent a letter of cessation of abuse to Setz requesting it to delete the relevant post. At the same time, the company has continued to attract external attention in the recent past as a result of high-intensity work culture rhetoric and short periods of continuous financing and rapid upscaling of valuations.

  • $106 million B1 rounds of financing completed last month
  • Corporate valuation increased to $2.6 billion
  • We just announced $160 million three weeks ago.
