Samsung Electronics and SK Hercules announced that they would invest up to 100 trillion won, or approximately $65 billion, in the next decade to expand semiconductor manufacturing, AI infrastructure and next-generation storage technology. The two companies want to consolidate Korea's leading position in the chip industry.
Investment orientation
The plan covers new chip factories, HBM containment facilities and the AI data centre. HBM is a key storage product in the AI Calculus Chain and an area of current focus for both companies.
Market responses
After the news was released, the stock prices of the two companies fell. Investors are more concerned with the size of their investment, financing pressures and project return cycles than with short-term expansion itself.
Follow-up concerns
The market will then observe the pace at which the project is moving forward, the funding arrangements and when the new capacity begins to contribute.
