Business Insider reports that in the communication between Anthropic and the White House around a new generation of models, it was not CEO Dario Amodei that came forward to de-escalate the situation, but that it was Tom Brown, a co-founder who had less public presence for a long time. He was reportedly involved in pushing the United States Department of Commerce to withdraw export restrictions on Fable 5 and Mythos 5.
Moving from entrepreneurs to AI research
Brown graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was a member of a number of Silicon Valley start-up companies in the early years. The report mentions that after the setback in entrepreneurship, he turned to AI research and supplemented the base with self-learning through online courses, Kaggle projects and teaching materials.
According to his previous memories in Y Combinator podcasts, GPU was also purchased from YC resources to complete studies and experiments. Those who know him describe Brown as a team known for its direct, honest and cross-functional collaboration.
OpenAI experience laid the status
According to reports, Brown entered OpenAI with Greg Brockman. Although he was not originally a researcher, he was later involved in a number of important papers in the AI field, including key studies in 2017 related to enhanced learning for human feedback.
In 2020, he was also involved in the study of language model extension patterns and led the engineering of the GPT-3 core paper. It was reported that these results contributed to the mainstreaming of large-scale model training routes into the industry and also laid the foundation for later ChatGPT.
At Anthropic, we're in charge of math and negotiation.
In Anthropic, Brown has long been responsible for providing the calculus needed for model training and reasoning. It was reported that the company currently uses both Trainium, GPU in Nvidia and TPU in Google to assign different tasks to different chip platforms.
This spring, with Claude Code's fast-growing demand, Anthropic once faced a period of arithmetical stress. Brown and his team subsequently announced a multi-billion-dollar collaboration with SpaceX's large data centre colossus to run the Anthropic model.
According to Business Insider, this withdrawal of export restrictions occurred at a critical stage in Anthropic. The company is considering moving forward with its first public equity fund-raising to provide additional funding for expansion and to provide staff with mobility arrangements. Brown's ability to represent the company in such negotiations also shows that his role has been extended from the head of the project to the level of political and commercial coordination.
