Cybersecurity, Malwarebytes, states that fraud committed through AI tools has been rolled over from bank accounts over the past year to approximately $893 million. Data reflect that generating AI is lowering the fraud threshold and making impersonation, fishing and social engineering attacks easier to replicate on a large scale.

Declining costs of fraud

The change in this type of scam is not only due to an increase in the number of people, but also to faster production and more realistic disguises. In the past, more human capacity was needed to write, decouple and disguise, and it is now possible to automatically generate it through AI, making it easier for the attackers to customize content to different populations.

Malewarebytes mentioned that bank accounts were one of the main victimization scenarios because the fraudster used AI in text messages, mail, voice and client conversations to induce users to transfer, hand over authentication codes or leak login information. Victims often lose control of accounts in a short period of time.

Fake and fishing are more real.

AI tools are enhancing the credibility of fraud information. Whether it is a fake bank notice, a payment reminder, or a disguise of the content of a communication of a mature person or institution, there are fewer errors in the language, and the expression is closer to the real scene, making traditional fraud-proof methods that rely on “identifying miswords and speech abnormalities” less effective.

In addition to textual content, voice forgery and image generation are expanding the risk range. The attackers can produce seemingly real identity material or communication records more quickly, further increasing the probability of victims being treated.

New pressures on financial institutions

Such changes mean that banks and payment agencies are already confronted not only with traditional malware or single-point fishing attacks, but with a more automated and low-cost chain of fraud. For users, the risks are mainly related to account validation, transfer authorization and identification.
