Google launched a new ad around the American Declaration of Independence, recasting the 1776 historical scene as a modern collaborative office demonstration. The ad is set out how the process of drafting and collaborating with the United States Founding Fathers would proceed if they could use Google Workspace and Gemini.

The ad was based on the main axis of “same as the group work, only time back to 1776”. In the film, Thomas Jefferson had received information from Benjamin Franklin when he drafted the document, which was followed by a number of amendments through Google Docs, followed by Google Calendar.

The ensuing discussion was held remotely on Google Meet and was finalized by electronic signature. Advertising in its entirety is clearly a mimic, and there is an easy bridge in the film, such as Samuel Adams' offer of beer.

Gemini is embedded in multiple links

AI was an important part of the ad, but presented in a way that was relatively restrained. The characters in the film use Google “help me visitualize” tools to try different state seal animal programs, Gemini is responsible for recording the meeting, and chat robots are also used to assist King George III's request for document access.

TechCrunch believes that one of the most prominent AI elements in the ad is probably the picture itself. The report mentions that this video has a visual sense of like AI generation.

Social platform feedback splits

From the Platform response, the comments on YouTube and Instagram were generally positive, but criticism on Bluesky was more focused. Some users refer to the ad as “an embarrassment” and “a lack of awareness of reality”, with AI-related settings becoming the main point of criticism.

However, it was also pointed out that, although the AI concept had emerged, there was not much really AI-driven content. Angus Johnston, a historian, said that the ad was “an amazingly small part of AI”, and questioned its failure to prove that AI was actually useful for political organization, writing or interpersonal collaboration.
