A group of entrepreneurs and executives who have achieved financial freedom and are well established in the technology industry have recently returned to line positions. TechCrunch states that such movements are becoming more common, and that one of the reasons behind them is that they do not want to miss the early stages of the generation of AI.
Tom Blomfield joins Anthropic
On Monday, Monzo and GoCardles co-founder Tom Blomfield indicated that he would temporarily leave his position as a partner of the Y Combinator group and join the Anthropic calculation team. Unlike what is often expected from the outside world, he did not serve in management, but as a member of a technical post.
This option is seen as a microcosm of the attraction of the current AI industry. For those who already have a curriculum vitae, resources and wealth, front-line large model development is still seen as one of the few that deserve to be taken back.
A number of famous people turned to front-line models.
Similar cases do not appear only on Bloomfield. Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger joined Anthropic in 2024 as Chief Product Officer. Andrej Karpathy, an early member of OpenAI, who was in charge of Tesla AI, joined the Anthropic pre-training team in May this year.
Karpathy stated at that time that the next few years would be a critical stage in the development of the front-line capabilities of the large model. This is close to the signal released by Blomfield on this transfer: even when career success has been achieved, there is a choice to return to the core of the technology competition.
Some people join the big factory, others start their own business.
Not all have chosen to join existing laboratories. Chamath Palihapitiya, a former focus for SPCC trading, recently became CEO of Enterprise-level AI Programming Initials 8090 Labs. This is the first time he has resumed his full-time operational role since he left Facebook in 2011.
8090 Labs had previously announced the completion of the $135 million A round of financing, with Salesforce Ventures. On platform X, Palihapitiya expressed his belief that the project currently under way was more important than in the past, and decided to invest fully.
Title of position also reflects changes in industry culture
TechCrunch mentions that "Member of Technical Staff" is commonly used in technical teams by Anthropic and OpenAI. This relatively flat job name does not place particular emphasis on hierarchical differences. It was the title that Blomfield accepted this time.
This is also an indication that AI currently places greater emphasis on the practical contribution of direct participation in modelling, numeracy and training than is common to traditional large companies at the managerial level. In March this year, former CTO Peter Bailis was transferred to Anthropic and used the same job name. According to the report, he was in charge of the AI strategy for an annual account of approximately $8 billion, but less than a year in service turned to front-line model companies.
From these changes, the Generating AI is attracting not only capital, but also technologists who are already “defunct” back to the front line of intense competition.
