According to Bloomberg, Stripe has finalized the purchase of the AI Gateway Enterprise OpenRouter at a price of over $7 billion. OpenRouter primarily helps clients to access different AI models according to needs and budgets, and is seen by the outside world as a unified access layer in the AI field.
OpenRouter just completed the $133 million B round of finance in May of this year, valued at approximately $1.3 billion. Its investors include Sequia, Andressen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures and the CapitalG under the banner Alphabet.
OpenRouter Positioning
The CEO of OpenRouter, Alex Atallah, then compared the company to "Stripe in the AI field" and emphasized that the platform provided a single portal to help clients avoid being locked in a particular model. The company also stated that there were 8 million users worldwide and more than 400 access models.
Progress of transactions
The Wall Street Journal reported last month that Stripe and OpenRouter were negotiating acquisitions. As a result of this disclosure by Bloomberg, discussions between the parties have advanced into formal transactions and the valuation has been pushed up to over $7 billion.
