The ISF warns that the Glamsterdam upgrade will change the Gas billing for some of the ETH transfers, and that problems of compatibility may arise by relying on fixed Gas assumed wallets, indexers and estimation tools. The upgrade plan was activated on August 20th at the Open Test Network Platåberget and then advanced to Sepolia and Holdi.
21000 Gas is no longer universal
The core of this warning, from EIP-8037, introduced a separate costing dimension for the "New State". According to the Foundation, the base cost of the transfer to the existing account is still 21000 Gas; however, if the collection address did not exist before, the transaction would bear the additional cost of creating the new account.
This means that by default 21000 Gas is considered to be the software with all ETH transfer caps, which may expire directly after upgrade. The Protocol DevOps team mentioned by name that wallets, indexers and Gas enumerators were all affected.
New charges affect multiple applications.
According to the Foundation, Glamsterdam is not just a Gas repricing update. The upgrade would also adjust the cost structure of individual operations and change some of the existing assumptions surrounding the block Gas limits. For application developers, the procedure that originally wrote the dead transaction cost boundary needs to be re-examined.
As a result of previous developments, EIP-8037 is close to the final version. The parameters disclosed in May indicate that the cost of creating new accounts may have risen to about 8.5 times, and that the cost of contractual deployment may have increased by about 10 times. However, large contracts are still designed to be deployable in order to avoid a direct disruption to the large volume of DeFi applications.
Synchronization of block production processes
Glamsterdam will also introduce the protocol proposer-builder security, i.e. ePBS. The mechanism would more clearly incorporate block construction, proposal and validation processes into the Etherwood Core Agreement, along with a new builder API process and load-times check.
This part of the adjustment mainly affects infrastructure related to block production and certification. The Foundation therefore recommends that independent pledgeors, distributed certificationer projects, self-defined software operators and large pledge service providers participate in the testing as soon as possible.
In addition, the upgrade includes Block-Level Access Lists. According to the Foundation, the design will record the location of the state visited during the implementation and the change of state after the transaction and transmit the relevant data between the executive nodes through the eth/71 agreement.
The test network has been open for months.
Platåberget came online on August 13th, and positioning is a public testing network that has been running for several months, allowing developers longer time to sort out post-up anomalies. The Foundation states that any tool that relies on hard-coded maximum Gas limits should first be tested in this environment.
The testing network is now open to certifyers and builder deposits for external participants to validate new processes. The Foundation lists clients that cover the mainstream of Lighthouse, Prysm, Teku, Get, Nethermind, Erigon, Reth, etc.
Under the current arrangement, after receiving feedback from Platåberget, ETA will continue this month to advance a development network to test complex consensus scenarios. After the development of the network and the long-term testing of the network have stabilized, Glamsterdam will enter the Etherman network.
