The start-up firm in Detroit, Gronded, completed $5 million in seed-wheel financing and launched a new plant of 50,000 square feet on the ground to expand commercial car retrofitting. The original owner of the company, the electric car retrofit, has now moved to support both electric and fuel vehicle models to adapt to changing demand in the United States market.

Financing synchronised with new plants

This round of financing continued to be followed up by Also Capital and the Chicago Early Investment Agency The 81 Convention, with new investors including Animal Capital, Michigan Autodor Innovation Fund and several former SpaceX employees. Graunded said that the new plant had begun production this month and that capacity would continue to improve next year.

Founded in 2022, Grounded initially provided modular modification programmes around electric wagons such as Ford E-Transit and General BrightDrop. The company's early orientation was mainly for “van life” users, which was subsequently extended to small-scale business clients.

Switching from electric vehicle conversion to multi-car platform

The reorientation was related to changes in the United States market for electric commercial vehicles over the past two years. Universal stopped pushing BrightDrop last year, and Ford cancelled the next generation of electric transit programs, which made it more difficult to sell electric cars in the US commercial scene.

Against this background, Grounded began to define its core business as a “platform on the body of a car” rather than relying solely on a chassis or power system. The company now wishes to extend modular design to more models, including fuel wagons, as well as some electric and hybrid vehicles.

Shapiro had previously indicated that the company would continue to digest the remaining BrightDrop stocks, while moving to more popular models such as the Ford oil version Transit, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and would also consider the use of the start-up company Harbinger ' s electric and mixing programmes.

Client coverage of business, medical and public services

Current clients have covered commercial, medical and veterinary fields, including Colgate, Nokia, Wayne State University Medical, and Health Mothers, Health Babies Commission of Hawaii. Nadia Meyer, head of the company ' s products, stated that the demand for food beverages and public safety-related clients was also growing.

According to the company, its core product is not a car as a whole, but a modular space system installed on a chassis, including design, materials, electrical systems and Grounded+ software. The package could transform vehicles into mobile medical vehicles, command centres, campers or mobile coffee shops.

For Grounded, this round of financing and the new plant means that the company is moving from a customized project model to a larger fleet retrofit. As its car-compatible model expands, the future customer base will no longer be limited to enterprises that are willing to directly use pure electric vehicles.
