A bitcoin address that has remained static since mid-2011, and all 8.54 BTCs have been transferred for the first time in recent days. Chain-based monitoring shows that the funds were transferred on August 16 through a single transaction, raising market concerns about the movement of early currency holders.
The address has been silent for about 15 years.
Galaxy Research disclosed that the address started with “1 Emi” and first received the bitcoin on 13 June 2011. At that time the BTC price was about $14, and the address remained silent about 15.1 years later.
Current value is approximately $538 million
These 8.54 BTCs are currently valued at approximately $538 million, as measured in the text. Using the average cost for the current year, the corresponding book value increased by approximately 461,981 per cent.
The transfer was recorded in blocks 962,770, and the funds were transferred one time. The public information did not show that the address belonged, so the identity of the holder and the purpose of the transfer remained unclear.
Increased number of similar cases in the last two years
Such transfers are of interest because many of the early bitcoin addresses have been considered lost by the market or the private key has long been unavailable. Once the addresses that have remained silent for many years have been reactivated, they are often interpreted as early currency holders regain control of the funds.
Analysts usually observe such changes in the context of “currency destruction” indicators. This indicator is used to measure the transfer of a bitcoin after a long period of non-movement, and thus to more clearly mark whether a change of hands occurred in a long-term hold.
However, an old address transfer does not necessarily mean a sale. Funds may also simply be transferred to a new hosting programme or replace storage addresses for security reasons.
In the past two years, it has not been uncommon for a bitcoin wallet to re-activate for years. Just last week, a 12-year-old address with millions of dollars in bitcoin was transferred.
In addition, earlier in the month, an unused wallet had been transferred out of 49.97 BTCs since 2011; another Bitcoin whale had transferred assets worth $383 million after eight years of silence. In 2024, there was also an unexpended set of bitcoin, amounting to approximately $2 billion, which had been transferred in a centralized operation since 2013, when analysts felt that it was more likely to be related to the hosting of the warehouse.
Galaxy Research stated that the address that was activated had no publicly available attribution information and that it was not currently possible to confirm whether the holder was ready to sell or to judge the further movement of the funds.
