The AI programming firm Cursor released the code hosting platform this week, Origin, with a further extension from the code editing tool to the development of a collaborative infrastructure. It's also a sensitive time point for products to go online: on the same day, GitHub again experienced global service anomalies that lasted several hours.
Origin overwrites common hosting functions
Origin is positioned as a complete code hosting service that covers core operations common to developers on GitHub, including collaborative multi-person development, browsing and editing of codes, processing requests for extraction and managing the code repository.
Cursor ' s main past product was AI Code Editor, which focused on automated web development. This launch of Origin means that the company has begun to expand from a “writing code tool” to a “host and collaborative platform”.
Support for simultaneous use with GitHub
Cursor also indicated that in the future, more “agents” would be connected to Origin and a wider application ecology would be built around the platform, but no details would be disclosed.
According to the company, Origin did not require the developers to move completely out of GitHub, and the code warehouse could synchronize between the two systems. The user connects the GitHub account and selects the organization to drag the warehouse into the Cursor hosting environment.
GitHub's failure is an entry opportunity.
On the same day Origin went online, GitHub suffered a long-term global failure. Reports indicate that the services in question have been abnormally over six hours, with a global error rate of nearly 20 per cent.
LeadDev had previously analysed that 257 malfunctions had occurred in GitHub over the past year. GitHub still has a clear size advantage, despite the problems of stability that have led to dissatisfied developers. According to data previously disclosed, the number of users of the platform ' s developers as of October last year was approximately 180 million.
