Mozilla is testing a new feature called Smart Windows for Firefox. It does not embed AI directly on an existing page, but provides a stand-alone window for users to talk to AI assistants while browsing. This feature is currently open for testing through an alternate list and will be kept closed by default.
Default Closes and Selectable Models
Smart Windows and Firefox exist alongside existing classic models, privacy. Mozilla indicates that users can decide whether to use AI, when to use it, and in what manner. The company also stressed that the user could choose the model on its own rather than be bound to a single ecology.
Mozilla has added a key to Firefox earlier this year to close all AI controls. This test continues on the same route, using "closable" itself as part of the product design, rather than making AI default permanent.
Browser AI competition to privacy
As AI functions accelerate access to browsers, privacy issues become the focus of competition. Mozilla, in his presentation, deliberately distanced itself from some of the AI browser products, stating that some of them would allow users to choose between "usual use of AI" and "no use of AI at all times", while Firefox wanted to retain greater autonomy.
Currently, multiple manufacturers are embedding AI in the advance browser. Brave has launched a LEO assistant based on Anthropic technology, which gives priority to primary privacy; Perpexity Comet, Microsoft Edge and Opera Neon are also strengthening the AI browsing experience. Google previously tried to enhance browser capabilities through local run models.
Mozilla continues to emphasize open choice.
Mozilla states that AI should remain open, accessible and driven by user selection. According to the company, Smart Window was still at an early stage, was moving forward in an open manner and hoped that the first testers would provide feedback.
This function is also in line with Mozilla's previous re-engineering of Project Nova. This modified version adds a unified control item to Firefox, allowing the user to turn off all AI functions at once. For Mozilla, AI is not just adding new capabilities but is part of the differentiation of browser products.
At present, the list of Smart Window's alternates is open for registration on Firefox but is not automatically available.
