Adit Singh, who was involved in the early investment of the AI chip company Cerebras, joined Mayfield, a 57-year-old wind projecter, as an infrastructure investment partner. Its new responsibilities cover hardware, infrastructure software, network security and physics AI, showing that the old fund continues to add a new AI base capacity.

Shift to AI infrastructure investment

Singh, who had previously served on Foundation Capital, helped to tap and co-lead the first round of financing for Cerebras. The original chip was still not well known to the market. Since then, he co-founded Neotribe Ventures in 2017 and joined the early investment agency Cota Capital four years later.

Today, Mayfield, Singh, states that an important reason for attracting him is the project layout of the institution in the semiconductor field. He mentioned that Mayfield had invested in recent years in such companies as Upscale AI and Lumilens, of which Upscale AI ' s latest valuation amounted to $2 billion, while Lumilens had financed $700 million at $5.5 billion.

Singh claims to have a chip design background and to be able to see how it is achieved at the transistor level from the application load. He indicated that this engineering training helped him to identify the potential of Cerebras 10 years ago.

  • Investments include hardware and semiconductors
  • Cover both infrastructure software and network security
  • Physics, AI, is one of its main directions.

This also reflects the current AI investment focus on bottom computing, system architecture and enterprise-level infrastructure, not just the model application layer.

Large-scale seed wheels driving institutional adjustments

Singh also mentioned that the scale of seed ship financing in the infrastructure direction has increased significantly in recent years. Faced with an increasing number of “super-large seed wheels”, smaller funds are more likely to be squeezed out, while Mayfield, which manages assets of up to $3 billion, can issue a check of up to $20 million during the seed wheel phase.

In the current context of the continuing interest in AI chips and infrastructure entrepreneurship, more well-funded and established institutions are trying to compete for high-quality projects by way of earlier and larger betting. For Mayfield, the inclusion of investors with the capability to judge the chips has also helped to continue to enhance competitiveness in semiconductor and AI infrastructure.
