Wal-Mart indicated that non-contact payment functions would be added to the cashiers at the United States Gate and Sam's member store from August 24 onwards and would continue for the rest of the year. Equipment upgrades related to gas stations are expected to be completed by mid-2027.

Support cell phones and watch payments

The company stated that consumers could then make payments using eligible non-contact bank cards, mobile phones or smart watches. The company spokesperson confirmed that this included common options such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.

This means that a long-lost mainstream mode of payment will be filled in the retailing scene of Wal-Mart online. For consumers who are accustomed to using mobile wallets to settle their accounts, the door-to-door payment process will be closer to daily usage.

NFC was long overdue

Wal-Mart has not fully accepted NFC-based payments in the past, but has promoted more of its own Wal-Mart Pay and Scan and Go functions to complete no-contact payments.

This practice has led to numerous consumer discussions in the past few years. Last year, when YouTube MrBeast publicly mentioned that Wal-Mart lacked the “light touch payment” option, the topic had spread rapidly on social platforms.

Retailers adjust payment options

Business Insider mentions that retail analysts have previously pointed out that young consumers in particular have become increasingly used to the use of Apple Pay or other light-touch payment methods on mobile phones, and have gradually seen such experiences as a default option.

The Wal-Mart adjustment also shows that large retailers are placing greater emphasis on consumer choice in the payment chain. According to the company, this is intended to provide customers and members with more means of payment and to facilitate daily shopping.

From an industry perspective, this change has not only affected the door-to-door closure experience, but also reflected a further increase in the acceptance of digital wallets and non-contact payments by large United States retailers.
