The Sandbox has suspended the SAND cross-chain transfer on Base and BNB Smart Challenge. According to the projector, the attackers used their cross-chain infrastructure to forge SANDs without collateral support, thus isolating the relevant coins in the two chains and conducting an investigation.

According to the projector, the bottom SAND assets locked on the Internet by the Taimen remain secure and the collateral of legal cross-chain coins is unaffected. The Ether and Polygon were not reached, nor were the user wallets broken.

Unusual increase in scale and actual impact

The Sandbox estimated that the actual impact of the incident was below 0.01 per cent of the total supply of SAND. This figure is very different from the nominal size of unusual foundries.

According to the security company Blockaid, the assailants forged some $49 billion worth of SAND through over 400 transactions. Peck Shield was monitored separately and about 14.9 billion SANDs were cast into two addresses.

Base and BNB chain two-way pause.

The projector has closed the two-way transfer of Base and BNB Smart Chain, preventing these unusually generated tokens from being redeemed through the cross-chain bridge or from re-routing to the collateral assets on the Ether House.

The Sandbox also reminds users not to trade or trade in SANDs on these two affected networks because the mobility has been compromised. The project team is preparing to produce a snapshot based on pre-incident status and has indicated that compensation will be provided to eligible liquidity providers.

Korea Exchange Synchronization Suspendment

This incident also triggered measures by the main South Korean exchange. Bithumb was suspended at 11 a.m. on August 22nd in Korean time for SAND recharge, and Upbit followed up in 1 minute. Both exchanges referred to security risks and cited measures under the Korean Virtual Asset User Protection Act.

Upbit used to suspend even SAND on the ETA network, but The Sandbox then stated that the SAND version of the ETA was not exposed to this loophole.

The Sandbox indicated that the full BCD report would be published after the investigation was completed. SAND on Base and BNB Smart Chain will continue to be separated from the unaffected Ether and Polygon markets until the cross-chain function is restored.
