Waymo is taking back more auto-driving cores. As the robotic taxi service continues to expand, this week the company disclosed that the Sixth Generation system has adopted a self-study 5 nanosIC chip to process a large amount of raw sensor data before the core computing system is taken over.

This chip has been used for a new generation of Ojai robot taxis in Waymo. According to the company, its computational performance exceeds 1000 TOPS, which is primarily responsible for handling vehicle sensor input and for sending data into the “primary brain” of the automated driving system.

According to public information, the Ojai vehicle was equipped with 13 high-precision cameras. According to Waymo, self-study chips help the system to identify and respond more quickly on high-density urban roads, while reducing the cost of manufacturing, operating and maintaining the entire vehicle.

More emphasis on cost control behind expansion

Waymo recently opened the Ojai service to all passengers in Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco. The company has repeatedly stated that the Sixth Generation system is cheaper than the previous generation, which is also an important condition for expanding its fleet and improving its profitability prospects.

In terms of co-operation, Waymo is not completely out of the external supply chain. The company listed a number of partners, including AMD, Microron, Nvidia, Samsung, Sandisk, Socionext and TSMC. This shows that the route is closer to the core chip self-control and parallel to the supply chain.
