Pacific Fusion has initiated the construction of new facilities in New Mexico, United States, with the objective of verifying that the fusion unit will achieve a net increase at the facility level, i.e. that the energy generated will cover at least the energy consumption of the entire facility. This is seen as a key threshold for commercial fusion power generation before it reaches the ground.

Target is 2030.

This model facility is located in Albuquerque. The company plans to achieve a net increase in facilities by 2030 and to point commercial power stations to the mid-2030s. Commercial-grade reactors also need to export higher energy than experimental systems to support more power generation packages.

At present, fusion industries continue to advance, but there is no real mechanism to cross this threshold. The U.S. national ignition device had previously demonstrated that the controlled fusion reaction itself could release energy that exceeded the reaction ' s consumption, but there was still a gap in total energy consumption from coverage of the facility.

156 pulse modules energy supply

Pacific Fusion uses a pulsed power-driven programme. Its path is to form a magnetic field around a fuel target with a high-intensity, sophisticated and synchronized electrical pulse, and to compress the fuel target of approximately the size of a pencil rubber into a fusion.

According to the company, the demonstration facility could complete a small number of experimental launches per day, while commercial power plants needed to increase their frequency to one per second.

The company tested one third of the module prototype earlier this year. The prototype released 440 giva peak power in 80 nanoseconds. According to Pacific Fusion, this result is sufficient to support the development of the demonstration facility.

According to the technical director of the company, the energy size of the single pulse of the new demonstration system is about 100 MJ and about 10 times that of the United States national ignition device.
