X is promoting the open source project Nitter offline by legal means. This project allows the user not to log on to X and not to open the application, so that you can view the public address directly. The project has confirmed that Nitter.net is currently offline and development work has been suspended.
X requires permanent offline.
The Nitter Network issued a short note stating that the project had been suspended after receiving a letter of cessation of abuse from X and that the founder was seeking legal advice. The developer Zedeus said to TechCrunch that other Nitter examples, in addition to the main station, received similar communications.
X requests that Nitter and its related examples be permanently offline while removing the project code repository. The deadline set for communications is 5 p.m. Eastern United States time on August 25th.
Allegations involving capture and bypassing interfaces
The correspondence consulted by TechCrunch shows that X accused Nitter of illegal use and circumvented its API and related data access rules. X alleged that it had evidence of Nitter ' s access to platform data, access to X accounts and message badges, which violated Platform rules.
In their correspondence, counsel for X also cited a number of state and federal laws, including Texas regulations on illegal computer access and the United States Lanham Act. This means that X is no longer just applying pressure through technical restrictions, but is turning to formal legal accountability.

Nitter is not the first time an X hit. In 2024, the flag ship example Nitter.net was briefly offline after X tightened API restrictions. The project had originally provided users with a simpler way of reading by capturing public postings and removing advertisements, tracking Cookie and JavaScript.
After that round of restrictions, users who want to host Nitter cases themselves need access to a real X account. Despite this, the project development was subsequently resumed and several examples re-entered.
Nitter also supports websites such as XCancel, which also allow users to view public content on X directly. As this legal action escalated, this type of Nitter-dependent access was also disrupted.
