Ring of the Amazon Smart Home Department announced that the company would adopt a new encryption standard called TAKE and set it as a default for video encryption and user control. The company disclosed that this set-up is primarily cloud-oriented, with the objective of enhancing user privacy while retaining smart alarms, video search and shared access.
Started with a gradual global reach
According to Ring, the full name of TAKE is "Throw Away the Key Encryption". This option will use a rotating set of encryption keys, which will be temporarily stored in the cloud, only called by the company when the user has enabled the functionality. Once the request is completed, the key will be removed within 24 hours.
Ring indicates that this approach allows the system to decrypt and process video content in a short period of time, thus supporting cloud-based capabilities such as Smart Alerts. For example, the system can send a reminder to users when a person, vehicle or package appears on the camera.
Still keep end-to-end encryption options
According to the company, TAKE will be rolled out to clients from September onwards and will become the default standard globally. However, the user can still manually select the end-to-end encryption instead of the TAKE.
Ring explained that end-to-end encryption, while further limiting external access, could also affect the use of some cloud-based functions, including video search, video description and sharing among trusted users. TAKE positioning is a compromise between these functions and privacy control.
Release Key Restoration
In a white paper presenting this standard, Amazon states that TAKE builds on the Open News standard developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force, Messaging Layer Security (MLS). If the user loses the original device and buys a new one, the authentication and encryption key can be restored near the Ring camera.
In addition to this, the user can restore access to the account by password, cloud backup, another approved device, or passkey.
I've been questioned about face recognition.
Prior to the release of this adjustment, Ring had been continuously criticized for its “Familiar Faces” function in recent months. This feature uses face recognition techniques to identify visitors.
In June of this year, a class action charged the Amazon with maintaining a roadblock image without consent. This time, the new encryption standard is being introduced, showing that Ring is trying to respond to external concerns about privacy while retaining smart recognition.
