SpaceX launched the NASA Nancy Grace Román Space Telescope at the 2nd LaGrand Point of the Solar-terrestrial System (L2) on 30 August at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, using Eagle Heavy Rocket. The total cost of this task is about $4 billion, one of NASA ' s most important new-generation space observation projects in recent years.
Reuters confirmed that the launch had been successfully completed. It is planned that the Roman telescope will complete flight, system roll-out, instrument calibration and in-orbit testing within approximately three months, followed by the formal scientific observation phase.
About nine months ahead of schedule.
NASA advanced the launch of this flagship scientific mission by about nine months, which is not common in projects of the same level. The target orbit of the Roman Telescope is at point L2, approximately 1 million miles from the Earth, which is suitable for long-term deep space astronomical observations.
NASA expects that the telescope will be used to map the distribution of billions of galaxies, study dark energy and dark matter and expand the search for extraplanetary planets in the solar system. Officially, it's expected to discover about 100,000 new extraterrestrial planets.
It's much bigger than Hubble.
The core advantage of the Roman telescope is not that one-time observations go deeper, but that it is possible to observe the sky at the same time on a larger scale. NASA indicates that it is at least 100 times as wide as the Hubble Space Telescope, while maintaining close sensitivity and resolution in many observation missions.
This means that it is better suited to carry out a wide range of missions. It is widely seen as a complement to the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes: the former are good at fine observations, the latter tend to study infrared depths, while Romans place greater emphasis on wide-area imaging and three-dimensional cosmic mapping capabilities.
Falcon heavy is still taking on key tasks.
The mission also took place at the point of the restructuring of SpaceX rocket operations. Just a few days before the launch, Mask indicated that once the Starfleet has been able to stabilize its multiple launches every week, SpaceX will eventually gradually dilute Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy and turn more engineering and manufacturing resources to Starfleet.
However, the Roman mission once again demonstrates that the Falcons remain difficult to withdraw in the short term. For high-value, high-reliability government payloads, falcon heavy remains a proven and mature option. NASA describes the falcon heavy three-stage booster configuration with a total of 27 Merlin engines with a push of about 5 million pounds.
This is also the sixth major NASA mission at the Kennedy Space Center using SpaceX Falcon Rockets, which included projects such as Psyche, Europa Clipper and IMAP.
At the corporate level, this launch reinforced SpaceX's current double-line narrative: On the one hand, falcon rockets remain an important implementation platform for the Government ' s space mission; on the other hand, the market ' s focus on the future growth of companies is shifting more towards starships, chains and its expanding AI operations.
