Meta's future data centre lease commitment surged to $27.9 billion, with full commitment to AI-based capital

On 30 July and 29 July, the United States technology giant Meta Platforms Inc. revealed in an updated regulatory document that the company ' s future data centre lease commitments had risen significantly to support the rapid expansion of the AI area. As at 30 June this year, Meta ' s outstanding lease commitments totalled $279 billion, a significant 53 per cent increase over the previous quarter ' s $183 billion, indicating a significant acceleration in its investment in AI infrastructure. Meta notes in the document that these future expenditures, which have not yet been reflected in the balance sheet, relate mainly to data centres, hosting rooms and the construction and operation of specific network infrastructure. In July of this year alone, Meta added new lease commitments amounting to $68 billion, and these contracts are expected to start in 2027 and 2028. Behind this huge lease commitment is the “arms race” carried out by Meta to seize the track of AI. With the explosion in the demand for computing power from AI model training and reasoning, the global technology giant is targeting data centre resources on an unprecedented scale. The data show that head-based enterprises, including Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle, have now exceeded $85 billion in total future data centre lease commitments。
