U.S.-Iraq officials claim that Iran and Oman are close to reaching an agreement on navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

On 4 August, the United States side invoked the statements of Iranian and United States officials that an agreement was being reached between Iran and Oman regarding navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. According to United States sources, according to the agreement negotiated between the parties, vessels entering the Persian Gulf will travel from a route close to the Iranian coast and controlled by the Iraqi side, while those leaving will take a route close to Oman. A number of Iranian officials said that “service fees” would be paid for the ship and that the income would be shared equally between Iran and Oman. However, one United States official, who had knowledge of the negotiations, stated that the Iraqi officials had expressed “inaccuracy” and that no “temporary” route in the Strait of Hormuz would be established without the approval of the Iraqi side and would not charge fees to passing vessels.
