New York Federal Reserve Survey: American consumers are becoming more optimistic about employment and inflation prospects
On 8 August, a survey released by the Federal Reserve in New York on Friday indicated that overall expectations of the United States employment market had improved in July, while expectations of future inflation had declined. The survey showed that if unemployed, the interviewee ' s probability of finding a new job rose to 46.2 per cent, the highest rate since the current year. This improvement is most evident among those with upper secondary education or below, as well as among those with an annual household income of less than $50,000. At the same time, consumer expectations for inflation in the coming year have declined slightly from 3.7 per cent before to 3.6 per cent. For the next three and five years, inflation expectations remained unchanged at 3.3 per cent and 3 per cent, respectively. However, consumers remain concerned about the overall labour market situation. The average probability of rising unemployment is expected to rise in the coming year. This upward trend is common in all age groups and income groups. Interviewees also considered that the likelihood of losing their jobs in the coming year had increased slightly, but remained below the 12-month average。
