The United Nations Special Envoy warned Yemen of the risk of relapse into large-scale conflict

On 14 August, the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, briefed the Security Council on the situation in Yemen on 13 August. Grundeberg warned that Yemen currently faces an “unprecedented” risk of relapsing into large-scale conflict, compared with the United Nations mediation since 2022. He pointed out that the relative calm that had prevailed for several years could be reversed in a few weeks of escalation. Glendeberg said that, despite the current critical situation, a negotiated solution was still possible. He has recently intensified his contacts with the Yemeni parties and, with the support of regional States, has visited Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Muscat, Oman, in an effort to promote de-escalation and to explore a viable political solution. Glendeberg stressed that any future political process must take into account the needs of all Yemeni parties and the Yemeni population. (In Russian)
