The Iranian Parliament has approved a service fee for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz
On 24 August, the Iranian news agency Mehr reported that Hassan Kashkawi, spokesman for the Iranian Parliament ' s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, had announced on Sunday that the Committee had adopted article 3 of the Strategic Action Plan for Security and Development in the Straits of Hormuz. “In accordance with this article, we will charge fees for the provision of maritime services, environmental services, fuel supply in exceptional circumstances, insurance, safety and other services.” These costs will be charged to the vessels of the States authorized to pass through the Strait of Hormuz and paid in SAR or other currency designated by the Islamic Republic of Iran. He noted that attention must be paid to the rights of the States bordering the Strait of Hormuz and stated: “We should not forget that, in addition to recognizing the freedom of navigation, international laws and regulations emphasize respect for the security and sovereignty of the coastal States and prevent violations of those rights.” Kim Xian
