Saudi Arabia promotes the Mecca agreement and considers the introduction of Iran
Saudi Arabia and Turkey and Pakistan are promoting the Mecca agreement and are considering inviting Iran to join it, which envisages the establishment of a collective security mechanism for Member States. Had Iran joined, the mechanism would have included Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan and Iran in the same security framework. The countries of the Middle East were seeking to reduce their dependence on United States security assurances, and the willingness of the Gulf States to settle their oil in United States dollars and to allocate their assets in United States dollars would be undermined if they established a pluralistic system of security and financial cooperation。
