Trump again claims that Greenland “should be controlled by the United States”

On 8 July, United States President Trump, before holding a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Erdoğan in the Turkish capital Ankara, again claimed that Greenland “should be controlled by the United States” rather than Denmark. In response to questions from journalists, Trump said that “Greenland is useless for Denmark and Denmark does not really spend money to help Greenland”, but Greenland is important for the United States. Trump linked the issue to the United States military presence in Europe, threatening that the United States could withdraw all its soldiers from Europe, which was already “very different” from 20 years ago.
