THE WHITE HOUSE OFFICIALS IN FRONT OF THE 2028 A.I. AGENDA WANT TO SHAPE THE FUTURE A.I. POLICY COURSE

On 17 July, AXIOS reported that former officials of the Obama and Biden Governments were launching a public policy initiative aimed at defining the position of the center-left camp vis-à-vis artificial intelligence. As the mid-term elections in the United States approach, Democrats across the United States are taking action on artificial intelligence, including the promotion of a moratorium on data centre construction and the election of AI security as a platform for public office. According to reports, the American Innovation Policy Forum revealed that the organization was working to shape the Democratic Party ' s vision in the area of artificial intelligence before the 2028 elections. The organization plans to hold a series of consultations throughout the United States to gain insight into the concerns of communities about artificial intelligence and to provide feedback to Washington. These discussions will form the basis for policy recommendations, and the Forum Fellows plan to provide policy briefings to parliamentarians starting this fall. Officials who have held senior positions in the regulatory bodies of the Obama and Biden Governments and the White House, as well as experts in other relevant fields, will form advisory boards to provide policy guidance to the initiative and the Forum fellows. Alex Roark, a founding member of the Forum and an official of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) during the Biden Government, cited Utah as an example where a data centre was announced and plans were subsequently withdrawn, reflecting the possible consequences of the inadequate integration of communities into the decision-making process. He said, “Just the same month that the project was presented, the Governor called on all residents on television, “We are going through an unusually severe heat wave, and everyone needs to conserve their water. ‘But at the same time, it is advancing the largest data centre project in the history of the United States.” He noted that the organization would like to explore in depth how the long-term AI policy in the United States should be developed — not just in terms of data centre construction, but more broadly in terms of artificial intelligence regulation, and ultimately a national policy framework.
