SAMSUNG, SK HERCULES, MIZUOKA AND THE CXL CONTROLLER

On 20 July, according to the Korean technology media ZDNet Korea, Samsung electronics, SK Hercules and American light technology reduced or abandoned the commercialization of CXL extension controllers. Specialized chip design companies such as Montage Technology (Montectech), Astera Labs and Primemass are filling this gap. This change means that the division of labour in the CXL ecosystem is being reshaped, with memory manufacturers focusing on manufacturing, and design ownership shifting to independent chip design companies. For capital markets, not only does it benefit the relevant chip designer, but it also means that in the short term the three major memory producers will not be able to enter into new competition around a complete CXL solution, and their core profit model will continue to be around traditional DIM memory products。
