Russia reduced its gold reserves for six consecutive months, breaking the 20-year upward trend

Russian official gold reserves have declined for six consecutive months, by approximately 43.5 tons as of early July, to low levels since 2022, and are currently worth approximately 73.4 million gold ounces (approximately 2282 tons), valued at approximately $29.9 billion. The total Russian international reserves fell from $747.4 billion at the end of May to $72.0 billion at the end of June, and the budget deficit reached about 4.6 trillion roubles at the end of March. Between 2002 and 2025, Russia accumulated over 1,900 tons of gold. According to the Central Bank of Russia, a portion of the gold reserves has been sold as gold prices have exceeded the historical high of $5,500 per ounce。
