AMERICAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CUT OFF 140,000 POSITIONS THIS YEAR

On 27 July, AI was affecting the number of posts, and according to the British Financial Times, USSTEC had cut nearly 140,000 jobs since the beginning of the year. Four of these companies, Amazon, Oracle, Meta and Microsoft, combined, cut some 50,000 jobs. The above-mentioned company announced a reduction of staff, while investing hundreds of billions of dollars in the construction of the AI data centre. Recently announced cuts were made by the work management software company Monday.com. In its submission to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission last week, it indicated that about 20 per cent of its workforce (over 600 people) would be cut as a “restructuring plan” for the company, in support of the “continuing transformation of product, market promotion and market entry strategies”, leading to a more streamlined and focused business model and investment in “AI-driven growth strategies”. Other major science and technology companies that recently announced reductions include Microsoft, which announced a reduction of approximately 4,800 positions early this month, mostly from the Xbox sector; Oracle, which announced a reduction of 21,000 employees over the past year; and Gitlab, which reduced some 350 staff last month. The reasons for these layoffs are all AI-related. However, other technology companies are still actively recruiting. Anthropic and OpenAI, for example, are absorbing downsized talent. Some of the downsized companies are also reassigning staff rather than simply eliminating jobs, such as Meta's earlier reduction of 8,000 and the redeployment of some 7,000 staff to AI-related posts; when IBM layoffs are made, it is announced that the base positions in AI and mixed cloud areas will triple。
