A new online website that centralizes large Internet platforms that still do not offer Passkey access options is an attempt to use public roll-calls to drive more companies to use this account security. Statistics show that about a quarter of mainstream applications and online services still do not support Passkey.

List of mainstream platforms

The list comes from the security researcher Scott Helme created whynopasskeys.com. Unsupported objects listed on the website include Instagram, Netflix and Spotify. In his blog, Helme states that the purpose of the list is to enable companies to open up the functionality as soon as possible, so that users can choose whether to use it or not.

In his view, open lists themselves could create pressure, as enterprises were often reluctant to be included on the “unsupported” side.

Passkey is considered a safer way to log in

Passkey is usually generated by user equipment and bound to specific equipment and corresponding websites. It can be used in combination with Face ID, Touch ID or physical security keys, or it can be stored in a password manager.

Passkey does not need complex characters for user memory and is more difficult to steal or cheat than traditional passwords. Unless the assailant actually controls the user equipment, it is often more difficult to obtain such documents.

Apples, Google and Microsoft have been supported

It was mentioned that large technology companies such as Apple, Google and Microsoft had provided users with Passkey access options on the support list side.

However, the situation of Instagram is special. Users are not completely unable to enable Passkey, but only if their account numbers are linked to Passkey's Facebook account. This means that Instagram does not currently provide a separate Passkey login path directly to all users.

TechCrunch states that Meta has not responded immediately to its request for comment on why Facebook and whatsApp have supported Passkey and that Instagram is not yet fully available. Asks have also been received by Netflix and Spotify and no response had been received at the time of publication.
