According to a new study, with the broader access of AI to the business and public sectors, the adjustment of higher education institutions to the curriculum, appraisal methods and job readiness is still lagging. The study concluded that schools should not continue to focus on identifying AI-generated content and academic misconduct, but should respond more directly to new demands on students ' abilities in the workplace.

Research focus on teaching shift

The study was published in Frontiers in Education, by Kelechi Ekuma of the Institute for Global Development at Manchester University. The article states that since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, the response of many colleges to the Generating AI has focused on testing tools and copying policies, but this does not answer the question of how students work with AI when they enter the workplace.

The study noted that AI and automation had entered the areas of public administration, welfare distribution, agriculture, finance, health, education and labour force management. This means that universities are facing changes in knowledge production, teaching methods and the working environment, not just new tools to enter the classroom.

Critical AI literacy is named

The authors argue that higher education institutions should incorporate “critical AI literacy” into their teaching priorities. At its core is not only the use of tools, but also an understanding of how AI works, where it will fail, and how to judge in complex situations, assess ethical consequences, communicate clearly and adapt to new technologies.

The study found that it is easy for schools to ignore longer-term capacity-building by considering AI primarily as a matter of academic integrity. The article also mentions that AI applications are associated with risks of error, bias, overdependence, unequal access and the impact of large technology companies on system development and distribution.

Training has been advanced by the Government and schools

Against this background, the authors suggest that universities invest more resources in AI capacity development that is difficult to replicate, such as critical thinking, ethical judgement, communication skills and understanding of complex social issues. At the same time, the study emphasized that this did not mean that each course would have to be converted into an AI course, but that the existing curriculum would need to re-examine how AI would change the problems and methods that were taught.

At the time of the publication of the study, schools, businesses and government departments were accelerating the AI training layout. The United States Department of Labor has launched the AI Apprenticeship Portal to expand training coverage in areas such as education, finance, health and manufacturing.

Earlier this year, the Google charity sector announced a $2 million project, in collaboration with the St. Dens College, to train over 100,000 artists in the use of AI tools. In April, United States President Trump signed an executive order establishing the White House AI Education Working Group and asked federal agencies to expand the AI project for students and teachers. In the same month, the School of Law of the College of Mississippi began requiring first-grade students to complete the AI related course, with a focus on understanding the technology and validating its output.
