THE UNITED STATES SEC ESTABLISHED A NEW FINANCIAL REPORTING AND ACCOUNTING ENFORCEMENT UNIT TO STRENGTHEN THE FIGHT AGAINST FINANCIAL FRAUD

On 6 August, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced the establishment of a new Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit within law enforcement, dedicated to financial reporting fraud, accounting and auditing irregularities. David Woodcock, Head of the Enforcement Department of the Commission, stated that the new department would expand the capacity of the Commission to combat misconduct in the accounting and auditing profession, with a focus on financial forgery cases and related securities law violations. This unit will consist of lawyers and accounting professionals and collaborate with other SEC departments in investigations and law enforcement. SEC indicated that the new department would be headed by Timothy Zimmerman. Zimmerman joined the SEC in May 2026, after 12 years of work with an international law firm and recently served as Deputy General Counsel for an international accounting and professional service company。
