NINE U.S. DEMOCRATIC SENATORS URGED CFTC TO BAN WILDFIRE-RELATED FORECAST MARKET CONTRACTS

On 7 August, nine U.S. Democratic Senators wrote to Michael Selig, Chairman of the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), demanding a ban on contracts for forecasting market events related to wildfires, stating that the contracts might encourage arson, insider trading and endanger public safety. In his letter, the Senator mentioned that Polymarket had received over $1.2 million in investments related to the 2025 fire in Palisades and Eaton, California. They also noted that some of the new platforms allowed users to wage wildfires and that the relevant markets allowed users to speculate on disruptive events. The Senator stated that the CFTC should bind the relevant investments before the start of the wildfire season next year and set up protection measures in the United States and offshore markets. Recently, market regulation disputes have been projected to persist, with federal and state regulatory powers in cases related to Minnesota, Kentucky and Michigan。
