The Coreum bridge was hit by a security breach, resulting in the loss of approximately 199,916 XRPs

The Coreum trans-chain bridge connecting XRP Ledger was hit by a security breach on 9 August, resulting in the loss of some 199,916 XRPs in less than two hours, and the balance of the bridge fell sharply from about 200,410 XRPs to 493.5 XRPs. The investigation revealed that the attack did not involve a loophole in the XRPL itself or a leak of the private key, but rather that the attackers discovered a defect in the identification of a deposit in the bridge repeater logic. The chain analysis showed that the attackers had completed the transfer of funds within 97 minutes through 94 over-signed authorized payment transactions. Since the multiple signature mechanism required 17 signatures out of 28 repeater keys, the attack succeeded in deceiving the consensus mechanism and in authorizing a large number of illicit transactions. As at 11 August, the Coreum bridge remained suspended。
