Iran claims that the Strait of Hormuz will not be opened immediately to finalize a new permanent route with Oman within 60 days

On 26 August, according to Tasnim News Agency, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister, Garibabadi, stated that the memorandum of understanding between Iran and Oman in the Strait of Hormuz did not mean that the Strait would resume open from tomorrow. He claims that over the past 58 years, the vessels have passed mainly through Omani waters, causing serious damage to Iran. Today, the Strait of Hormuz is a national security issue for Iran and access routes need to be adjusted. Under the agreement, the routes into and out of the Persian Gulf would pass through Iranian and Omani waters, respectively, which he described as a “two-way highway” about seven nautical miles wide. According to Garibabadi, this route is temporary and the parties will negotiate a permanent route within 30 to 60 days。
