The Sandbox Bridge was compromised: 3.29 million SANDs were found and $675 million was stolen
The Sandbox bridge was porous, and the attackers used the configuration defects of the Bare and BNB smart chains to forge 3.29 million SANDs and steal some $675 million from the Etherak vault. Although the headline figures showed a nominal value of $49 billion, the actual losses were much lower. During the night of 21 August, the attackers launched an attack through the Sandbox SAND token contract, dispersing the casting SAND into 173 wallets within five hours. The security company Peck Shield first discovered the activity and, in response, the Sandbox team had withdrawn available funds and left. The Sandbox team confirmed that the SAND tokens on the Ether and Polygon had not been affected and that no user wallets had been stolen. The impact of the incident was estimated at less than 0.01 per cent of the total supply of SAND。
