Cambridge preliminary study: annual electricity consumption for Bitcoin mining increased to 190 TWh and low-carbon energy to 59.4 per cent
On 26 July, according to TheEnergy Mag, the research director of the University of Cambridge Alternative Finance Centre (CCAF), Alexander Neumueller, disclosed preliminary data at the Energy Investors Forum that between June 2024 and December 2025, the annual consumption of electricity from Bitcoin mining increased from 138 TWh to about 190 TWh, an increase of about 38 per cent; and greenhouse gas emissions increased from about 40 million tons to 48 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, an increase of about 20 per cent. The share of low-carbon energy in the power structure for mining rose from 52.4 to 59.4 per cent, and hydropower exceeded natural gas, making it the largest single source of energy。
