THE KOREAN GOVERNMENT IS CONSIDERING THE EXTENSION OF THE SOVEREIGNTY CORE UPU SAFEGUARD PROJECT WITH A BUDGET OF APPROXIMATELY 4 TRILLION WON NEXT YEAR

On 7 July, the Korean Government informed that it was considering the extension of the AI core resource GPU Guarantee Support Project. On 7 July, according to industry sources, the Korea Ministry of Science and Technology Information and Communication is investigating the additional capacity of Korea's main cloud service providers to build GPUs, with the objective of extending the “AI Resource Utilization Base Enhancement Project”. The core of the project is the Government ' s budget for the purchase of GPUs, which are deployed in the cloud service provider data centre and support for the use of production research. The Korean Government invested 1 trillion won last year, and 2 trillion won this year, guaranteeing more than 20,000 GPUs. The project was scheduled to end this year, but the next generation of advanced resource requirements, such as GPU Vera Rubin, have surged, and the Korean Government is developing a comprehensive response, including data centre optimization, a new space piping programme, and has reportedly applied to the Enterprise Budget Office for an “out-of-limit budget” for GPU guarantees. The industry estimates that, taking into account this year ' s GPU guaranteed budget and the Government ' s will, next year ' s budget is about 4 trillion won. The industry view is that the “equipment space” will be key to the success of the project compared to the GPU supply itself, as thousands of high-performance GPUs will require a large supply of electricity and advanced cooling systems at the same time, while equipment installed space held by Korean enterprises is close to saturation.
