OpenAI and Anthropic workers sent a letter calling on the U.S. government to establish mechanisms to monitor AI development

On 29 July, employees of the media, OpenAI and Anthropic, were circulating a petition calling on the United States Government to support the establishment of a mechanism to help “consciously regulate” the pace of development of artificial intelligence to prevent it from developing too fast. According to informed sources and copies of the petition, staff of several top artificial intelligence laboratories have sent open letters to their peers calling on the United States to support an international initiative to promote more advanced artificial intelligence systems. The document warns that artificial intelligence may develop at a faster rate than human “understanding or control” and that there is a “real risk” and refers to progress in the area of the automation of artificial intelligence research. The petition states: “The United States Government should support an international cooperation to develop the technology and governance tools necessary to control the front-line process of automated artificial intelligence development in a targeted manner.”
