Google announced the completion of the largest solar and storage procurement to date in Arkansas. The project ' s electricity will be incorporated directly into the electricity grid to offset the demand for electricity in its data centres, showing that AI infrastructure expansion is driving technology companies to pre-lock large-scale power resources.
The first two issues were fully purchased by Google.
Google stated that the company would not only be involved in the investment of the project, but would also buy all the electricity exports from the first two issues. The project, which is being carried out by Google together with the developer Cypress Creek Energy, will add 1 Giwa solar and 1.9 Giwa-hour battery storage in the first two phases.
According to the company, after the first two shipments, the amount of electricity generated was sufficient to cover the peak demand for electricity in Arkansas of about 6 per cent. Cypress Creek has funded $3.5 billion for the previous two periods.

The project is called Steel River Energy Center, 30 miles north of Memphis, Tennessee. According to Google and the developers, when all three phases are completed, it will become the largest solar facility in the United States.
The third issue is expected to be connected in 2029. By that time, the total size of the project will be approximately 1.8 Giwa solar and 2.9 Giwa hour battery storage. Solar energy, coupled with large batteries, provides power to the grid over a longer period of time.
Google also indicated that such projects would help to advance its objective of matching clean electricity with hours. This model places greater emphasis on the correspondence between the time of generation and the time of actual use than a single purchase agreement.
XAI still bets on gas power
Reports indicate that this clean-up power project is approximately 40 miles from a gas power facility in xAI. XAI is relying on natural gas to power its colossus data centre, which contrasts the energy routes of the two companies.
According to Reuters, XAI operated nearly 60 gas turbines at the facility, but had not yet obtained permission from the Federal Clean Air Act. It was also reported that pollution from the facility was affecting surrounding communities, mainly black residents.
Google, however, does not completely exclude natural gas. It was reported that Google had also previously worked with Crusoe to build a 933 MW power station in western Texas, but that its expansion in recent years had remained largely dominated by renewable energy and energy reserves.
